Fellowship Program Overview
Letter from the Director:
Thank you for considering Sparrow/Michigan State University Sports Medicine Fellowship!
The Michigan State University Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship has been in existence since 1986. It was originally established by Dr. David Hough, one of the founding members of the AMSSM, to provide care to the community athletes and continues to flourish to this day. It is a one-year unopposed ACGME-accredited program option to physicians who have completed residency training in the fields of family medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics, physical medicine &rehab, or internal medicine.
The purpose of the program is to enable physicians to develop expertise in sports medicine. Fellows receive training in all areas of primary care sports medicine, including exercise-related illness and injury, concussion, physiology, pharmacology, nutrition, non-surgical orthopedics, fracture management, musculoskeletal radiology, sports psychology, and exercise and wellness counseling. The fellowship includes an ultrasound curriculum teaching both diagnostic and procedural techniques. Essential teaching is emphasized and developed through the cooperation of several departments at Michigan State University, including family medicine, orthopedic surgery, and the Michigan State University athletic department. The fellowship is housed within the Sports Medicine Division of the Department of Orthopedics, which serves as the primary clinical site, and is ACGME-accredited through the Department of Family Medicine at Sparrow.
The fellowship experience includes a high volume of outpatient sports medicine patients of all ages allowing for a high volume of procedures including diagnostic and procedural ultrasound, PRP, fracture care, and TENEX. In addition, the direct hands-on involvement at the NCAA Division I level with Michigan State University is unparalleled, and a rare chance to gain exposure with medical decision-making in high-level athletics. Fellows are involved in the direct care of MSU athletes in the training room as well as with sideline sports coverage.
The fellowship has a strong and enthusiastic faculty of fellowship-trained sports medicine physicians and orthopedic surgeons who are focused on teaching and mentoring the fellows in their career as sports medicine physicians.
