About Us

Department of Orthopedics is a joint Department under College of Osteopathic Medicine and College of Human Medicine.  Our mission is to provide the best care for patients with all aspects of bone and joint disorders and orthopedic disease processes.  We seek advanced understanding and treatment options of these conditions through research and other scholarly work, and educate the next generation of physicians, scientists, and providers in the field both locally and globally.

The Department includes clinical faculties who contribute towards education, research, and clinical aspects of Orthopedic care.  These include the divisions of Primary Care Sports Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, Orthopedic Hand Surgery, and Orthopedic Trauma Surgery.

The Department of Orthopedics has a strong core of faculty created from the prior Division of Sports Medicine with strong subspecialty training in both Orthopedic Surgery and Primary Care specialties.   We have faculty representation in the Orthopedic Residency Program at McLaren Greater Lansing, Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at Sparrow, PM&R/Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, Orthopedic Department at McLaren, and Sparrow Sports Medicine/Concussion Clinic which assists our Department in carrying out the mission of COM with engagements in multiple programs in the community.  Our Department is aligned in COM’s educational mission by having our faculty members teach undergraduate students, medical students, interns, residents, and fellows in our clinical practice.  With our faculty present in COM classes (Osteopathic Patient Care), the request for medical student clerkships and shadowing in our clinical practice have increased as they are interested in our specialty.

Department of Orthopedics is currently collaborating with the Department of Kinesiology and have several research clinical projects that are underway in the Athletic Injury and Rehabilitation Lab.  Both knee injury and concussion research opportunities can lead to improved health outcomes, quality, and safety.  This will help us provide a needed service to our athletes in the community.

Our Department currently has Fellowship Trained Orthopedic Surgeons, Fellowship Trained Primary Care Sports Medicine Physicians, Fellowship Trained Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician, and two Physicians Assistants in clinical practice at the MSU SportsMEDICINE Clinic.   For over thirty years, we have provided quality health care to MSU athletes and the mid-Michigan area.  We are the leader in providing non-operative and operative care to athletes and sports participants of all ages.  Evaluation and diagnostic services are provided by the experienced staff physicians, physician assistants, and support staff.  Utilization of athletic training services within the clinic and with local physical therapists, allows athletic participants an aggressive and comprehensive approach to return to sports and the performing arts.

Comprehensive care of the injured athlete and active participant is the primary focus of MSU SportsMEDICINE.  The staff of primary care and orthopedic specialists work closely with primary care providers in the mid-Michigan area offering a referral opportunity to better serve the active recreational athletes regarding their injuries.  Utilizing a full spectrum of ancillary health care providers within MSU and throughout the community, MSU SportsMEDICINE has taken the approach to treating the whole athlete as opposed to any of its parts.

Community Outreach

The faculty members of the Department have a very strong commitment and history with regards to community outreach with involvement in the local high schools for athletic event coverage and MHSAA events.   The primary focus of our clinical practice is to provide comprehensive care to the injured athlete and active participation in our community.
